curls that don't just look good when they're wet

curl chemistry

Hair cuticles sit flat, appearing smooth when they are adeuqately hydrated and raise to a frizz when they are in search of moisture. The key to great wavves is enriching the hair with moisture that penetrates the strand, smoothens the cuticle and enhances curl groupings.

4 steps, 1 principle

fix moisture and you fix frizz

Put simply, the culprit to your frizzy curls is dehydration and curly hair is especially thirsty. Hair cuticles sit flat and appear smooth when they are properly hydrated and raise seeking moisture when they are dehydrated. The nature of curly hair makes it especially prone to dryness and thus frizz. The solution can be found in 4 moisture-fixing steps that together make the perfect routine for freshly defined wavves.

1) Cleanse without stripping with a curl friendly shampoo.

If your hair gets fluffy or frizzy after you wash it, your shampoo might be the culprit. Shampoos with harsh detergents like sulfates leave your hair feeling “squeaky clean” because they completely strip it of natural oils. The result? Dehydrated hair that frizzes up as it dries. Our 001 Curl Shampoo gently cleans away dirt and sweat but leaves hair feeling silky and moisturized.

Directions: Think of shampooing as cleaning your scalp more than your hair. Use your fingers to massage a small amount of Curl Shampoo all over your scalp, roots and wet hair. It will lather slightly, but won't form a thick bubbly layer like most shampoos. Always wash it out thoroughly.

2) Detangle with a quality leave-in conditioner that doesn't clog and block moisture absorption.

If your hair looks and feels great when wet but frizzes up as it dries, your conditioner might be the culprit. Your scalp is always producing oils that moisturise and strengthen hair. The longer and curlier your hair is, the less oil makes it down to the ends. The result? Ends that are dehydrated, dull and tangle easily. Our 002 Curl Conditioner picks up where your scalp left off with organic oils that mimic those produced by your scalp.

Directions: After shampooing, apply a generous amount of conditioner, focusing on the mid-lengths to ends. Work out any knots with the Detangler, starting at the ends and slowly making your way up. Wash it out. Then for extra hydration, rake a dollop of conditioner through wet hair and leave it in.

3) Treat your hair with natural oils during and in-between washes.

If your hair gets unruly a day or two after washing, you're not alone. Dehydration is the root cause of frizz, tangling and dullness. Curly hair is more porous (absorbent) than straight hair, making it particularly thirsty. In the context of hair, hydration means quality oils that mimic the oils produced by your scalp. Our 003 Hair Oil amps up and locks in moisture for silky, shiny, frizz-free curls.

Directions: Apply oils after conditioning and in between washes. Lightly coat your palms and fingers with oil and scrunch into the ends of wet hair. Add a few drops to your conditioner for extra moisture and shine. Use on dry hair to tame flyaways and stubborn frizz.

4) Lock in moisture whilst defining curl formation with a setting gel made for curls.

Looking for perfectly sculpted, photo-finish curls? Gel is the best styler for curls. It locks in moisture, enhances your natural curl pattern and cuts through frizz. Avoid generic gels with dehydrating ingredients that worsen frizz ove rthe long-term. Our 004 Curl Defining Gel is the ultimate finish to your curl routine.

Directions: Apply a generous amount of product evenly through sopping wet hair. Don't be stingy - coat those curls using a scrunching technique to encourage curl groupings. To dry, squeeze (don't rub!) excess water from your hair using a smooth fibre cloth like our Bamboo Towel or a spare cotton T-shirt. Air-dry curls or use a hairdryer with a diffuser attachement. Once fully dry, coat your palms with a smear of 003 Hair Oil and scrunch out the gel cast to reveal soft, freshly defined wavves.
